12 possibilities for Steven Van Zandt’s ‘me covering me’ album

by JAY LUSTIG

STEVEN VAN ZANDT

In a tweet last week, Steven Van Zandt said that his next album, to be released in April or May, has the theme of “Me covering me! Songs I’ve written or co-written for other people.”

He’s already released one song, “Saint Valentine’s Day” (originally recorded by The Cocktail Slippers) as a single. But here are 12 more songs that are possibilities for the album.

There are many other possibilities, of course. These are just 12 that I’d love to hear. Please feel free to suggest others in the Comments section, below.

(Note: I didn’t include “Daddy’s Coming Home,” recorded by Gary U.S. Bonds, because Van Zandt said in a separate tweet that that song is not on the album.)

“I Don’t Want to Go Home,” from the 1976 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album of the same name.

“This Time It’s for Real,” from the 1977 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album of the same name.

“Love on the Wrong Side of Town,” co-written with Bruce Springsteen, from the 1977 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album This Time It’s for Real.

“I Played the Fool,” from the 1978 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album Hearts of Stone.

“Trapped Again,” co-written with Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen, from the 1978 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album Hearts of Stone.

“All I Needed Was You,” from the 1991 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album Better Days.

“I’ve Been Working Too Hard,” from the 1991  Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album Better Days.

“Last Time,” from the 2015 album Introducing Darlene Love (as well as the 1982 Gary U.S. Bonds album On the Line).

“I Found Love,” co-written with Maria McKee of “Lone Justice,” from the 1986 Lone Justice album Shelter.

“Standing in the Line of Fire,” from Gary U.S. Bonds’ 1984 album of that name.

“Heard You Got a Thing for Me,” from The Cocktail Slippers’ 2009 album St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

“Ride the Night Away,” co-written with Steve Jordan, from Jimmy Barnes’ 1985 album For the Working Class Man (and Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes 1991 album Better Days).

“I Don’t Want to Go Home” is SSJ’s signature song. He should leave that alone. He’s done most of the songs listed in concert and hasn’t really changed them at all. Hopefully he focuses on the lesser known songs like “Next to You” or “Working Girl.” I know he didn’t write it but he did a great cover of the Crystals’s and Mink DeVille’s “Little Girl” at a Darlene Love show one time. That would be a cool bonus track.

Until the Good is Gone & Coming Back would fit…as would Better Days

“Baby Please Don’t Go” would be great. He’d just have to decide which arrangement he’d like to lean towards, Ronnie Spector’s or Nancy Sinatra’s. Or maybe something new altogether.
