I’m not sure if it happens every year, but Hoboken’s annual “Sinatra Idol” competition has sometimes ended with a joyous group rendition of one of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ signature songs, “New York, New York,” outdoors on the Hoboken waterfront, with the New York skyline visible in the background. It’s the perfect way to pay tribute to the most iconic singer Hoboken (and New Jersey as a whole) ever has produced.
Check out the 2010 “New York, New York,” below.
This year’s “Sinatra Idol” contest will take place June 11 at Sinatra Park, as a prelude to the June 12-14 Sounds of Sinatra Weekend being presented by the city of Hoboken at various venues throughout town. The Weekend and other events throughout the year (in Hoboken and elsewhere) are being presented to honor the 100th anniversary of Sinatra’s birth (on Dec. 12, 1915).
New Jersey celebratedits 350th birthday lastyear. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we are markingthe occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, for almost a year — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. We started in September 2014, and will keep going until late in the summer.
If you would like to suggest any songs to be included, please let me know in the comments section underneath the video. And if you want to see the entire list, either alphabetically or in the order the songs were selected, click here.
