Appearing on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM satellite radio show on Monday, comedian Jeff Ross said that Joan Rivers gave Gov. Chris Christie an impromptu roast at the 60th birthday bash Stern threw for himself at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York in January 2014.

River and Ross, a Springfield native who specializes in roasts and is nicknamed The Roastmaster General, co-roasted Stern on the show, which was broadcast live on Sirius XM, and has been replayed many times since then. As they were leaving, Ross said on Monday, “we just hear this noise coming up the stairs, and it’s Chris Christie climbing the stairs of the Hammerstein Ballroom, and (the Bridgegate scandal) was happening, and she just starts, ‘boom, boom, boom boom,’ roasting him right in front of his security team. Finally, he goes, ‘Mercy! Mercy!’ ”

“Do you think she knows, on some level, that story will get out one day? ‘Cause it will be legendary that she started roasting Chris Christie?” Stern asked Ross on Monday.

“I hope so,” Ross replied. “Joan Rivers, roast in peace. I love you.”

Christie was at the 2014 birthday bash to introduce Jon Bon Jovi, who was one of the evening’s musical guests.

Rivers died less than a year later, in September 2014.
