With the help of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Jon Stewart, Montclair resident Stephen Colbert explored the question, “Is Central Jersey a Real Place?”, in a taped segment on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” last night. You can watch it below.

Many people only think in terms of North and South Jersey. But Murphy, a Massachusetts native who moved to Middletown about 20 years ago, referred to Central Jersey in his January inaugural address, which launched some media discussion about the term. In his introduction of the clip, Colbert referred to “a small civil war between the North, the South and the … the middle part.”

Murphy, interviewed by Colbert, called Central Jersey “a little bit of a mystical kingdom,” but then said “it’s not abstract, it’s there, I promise you,” and basically refused to give Colbert a straight answer about anything.

And so Colbert turned to “the Chief Justice of the Garden State himself”: His former boss, Jon Stewart, who grew up in Lawrenceville and now lives in Red Bank. Watch the clip to see what Stewart’s verdict was.
