Major virtual dance events are planned for the South Orange Performing Arts Center, over the next two weekends.

April 24 at 7:30 p.m., Carolyn Dorfman Dance will appear in a virtual gala performance/benefit. The event, titled “Thrive,” will feature three works plus an interview with Dorfman by dance journalist (and NJArts.net contributor) Robert Johnson.

The dances to be performed will include “Facets Redux” (a collage of excerpts from dances about love); excerpts from “WAVES,” a 2015 Dorfman work that features cello, recorder and beatboxing; and “Snap Crackle Pop,” a collaboration between Carolyn Dorfman and Renee Jaworski, co-artistic director of Pilobolus.

Included in “Facets Redux” is a section of Dorfman’s new “Prima!” that features Louis Prima’s recording of “I Want You to Be My Baby” (featuring his wife, Gia Maione Prima).

“We are so grateful to SOPAC for presenting the company as part of their 2021 dance series,” said Carolyn Dorfman in a press release. “This presentation has allowed us to use this opportunity as our annual benefit gala fundraiser entitled ‘Thrive.’ Since it is still impossible to have live performances, but maintaining our company and operations during the pandemic requires funding. We need everyone’s support more than ever to help us ‘Thrive’ beyond this year.”

SOPAC will also present “Capturing the Moment,” a showcase of New Jersey Council on the Arts Choreographer Fellows, April 30 and May 1, streaming at 7:30 p.m. The streams will feature performances and interviews with the choreographers by Robert Johnson.

The featured choreographers are Erin Carlisle Norton, Oluwadamilare (Dare) Ayorinde and Pallavi Degwekar-Shaikh, April 30; and Tsai Hsi Hung, Robert Mark Burke, Barkha Patel and Nai-Ni Chen, May 1.

These streams are free, but registration is required. Visit sopacnow.org/events/capturing-the-moment.
