As has been the case for the last few years, Montclair will not have an official series of First Night events, as it used to on New Year’s Eve. But the new Old Mogul Theatre at 180 Bloomfield Ave. will host a “Family New Year’s Rock-n-Roll Ball” featuring children’s band Jason Didner and the Jungle Gym Jam.
Didner and his wife and bandmate Amy, who live in Montclair, were disappointed when the town stopped presenting First Nights in 2012. “The Township and the Arts Council simply didn’t have the money or the sponsors to make it work on such a large scale, even though the interest among nearby residents never went away,” Jason Didner said in a press release. “When I heard about this new performance space, I felt the time was right to bring back something on a smaller scale.”
In addition to music, the event will also feature an arts-and-crafts station, a magician and a face painter, and prizes will be given away in random drawings.
Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the music will start at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., the band will play “Auld Lang Syne” and a ball (decorated by children at the event) will drop, since it will be midnight at that time in Paris.
