MARIA SCHNEIDER

Discussions about the music of jazz icons Ella Fitzgerald, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck and Herbie Hancock will be among the offerings in a new virtual series being offering by NJPAC in Newark, as part of its In Your Living Room series.

The TD Jazz Series, sponsored by TD Bank, starts Nov. 10 with a conversation between composer and bandleader Maria Schneider and saxophonist Donny McCaslin. As part of this event, Schneider will share and talk about tracks from her 2020 album Data Lords. McCaslin is a longtime member of the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and is also known for his work on David Bowie’s Blackstar album.

The Nov. 13 conversation will feature mandolinist, singer-songwriter and host of the National Public Radio show “Live From Here” Chris Thile, with singer-songwriter-guitarist Madison Cunningham.

On Nov. 24, Herbie Hancock collaborators Lionel Loueke (guitar) and James Genus (bass) will talk about Hancock in a conversation titled “Chameleon.”

On Dec. 1, Grammy-winning producer Seth Abramson will host a conversation about Newark-born saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter featuring pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade.

On Dec. 15, Abramson will also host a “Centennial Celebration” of Dave Brubeck (born on Dec. 6, 2020) featuring pianist Bill Charlap and drummer Kenny Washington.

Violinist Regina Carter will present “A Salute to Ella in Stories and Song,” honoring Ella Fitzgerald, Jan. 12. Carter will be featured in conversation with NJPAC president and CEO John Schreiber.

All presentations will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Schneider-McCaslin, Shorter and Brubeck events are presented in conjunction with the New York jazz club, Jazz Standard.
