The Montclair jazz club Trumpets will close at the end of September.

The Sept. 28 appearance by Ty Stephens & SoulJaazz at Trumpets Jazz Club & Restaurant in Montclair is being billed as the jazz club’s closing concert. While not a surprise — it has been known for months that the venue (and its coveted liquor license) was for sale — the news is still a major blow for New Jersey’s jazz community, which does not exactly boast an abundance of jazz-friendly nightclubs.

Other shows scheduled for the club’s last month include a “Broadway Night and Open Mic,” Sept. 6; the Bossa Nova Sextet, Sept. 13; Hernan Romero & Monica Abrego, Sept. 14; Miriam Waks & Alberto Pibiri, Sept. 20; and Good Stuff, performing the music of Steely Dan, Gino Vannelli, Sting and Stevie Wonder, Sept. 27.

According to its website, trumpetsjazz.com, Trumpets opened in 1985 and was sold to its current owners, Enrico Granafei and Kristine Massari, in 1999. Wynton Marsalis, Gato Barbieri and Dave Valentin are among the artists who have performed there.

I have been a patron of this club many many times. I will be at the Last show September 28th. One of my favorites is Bob Baldwin. I will miss this friendly, cozy spot and especially the kindness of Kristine Massari and her amazing staff. I just hope the next owners or as wonderful as the last.

I was there a few months ago and I believe the original bartender was still there. Many magic moments experienced there
