A Kickstarter campaign has been started to help filmmakers complete a documentary about singer-songwriter Garland Jeffreys, titled “The King of In Between.” Click here to find out more and/or donate.
Rewards, ranging from a digital download to executive producing credit on the film itself, are being offered at various levels from $25 to $10,000.
“I need your support to get this film across the finish line!,” Jeffreys said in an email message to friends and fans.
According to the site, most of the money will be used to license film footage and music, though some will go to other expenses, such as the sound mix, color correction and marketing. A release in late 2023 or early 2024 is planned.
According to a message on the Kickstarter page, “The film takes us through a panorama of New York: working as a ‘stock boy’ in a Coney Island booth, sneaking into Manhattan to see Nina Simone and Miles Davis, befriending Lou Reed at Syracuse University, becoming an early disciple of Swami Satchidinanda in the East Village’s ‘peace and love’ days, playing iconic clubs like Max’s Kansas City and Reno Sweeney, touring throughout Europe and releasing successful albums in the latter half of his career, and closing with his all-star tribute retirement shows at City Winery.”
Jeffreys’ wife, Claire Jeffreys, who manages him and is producing the film, writes on the Kickstarter page, “I decided to make this film not only to bring Garland to a wider audience, but also because it seems the world has finally caught up to his commitment to examining issues of race and social justice in his songs. He belongs in the conversation. His perseverance will inspire people everywhere.”
Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Jeffreys’ self-titled solo debut album (though he also released an album with the band Grinder’s Switch, three years before that). He retired from touring in 2019.
