One of the pioneers of funk — George Clinton, who was raised in Newark — will return to the city on July 16 for a concert with his Parliament-Funkadelic Band at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, as part of its 17th annual free, outdoor, Thursday night Sounds of the City series.
Another funky good time is guaranteed on July 30, when The Family Stone (featuring original saxophonistJerry Martini and trumpeter Cynthia Robinson but not, alas, mercurial frontman Sly Stone) performs at Sounds of the City.
It’s a notablystar-studded year for the series, with otherofferings including an old-school rap show featuring Slick Rick, Kurtis Blow and others on Aug. 13, and salsa singer José Alberto “El Canario” on Aug. 20.
