If there was any doubt that Asbury Park has the strongest local music scene in New Jersey, just look at the nominees in the 40 — that’s right, 40 — categories for the 2014 Asbury Music Awards. There are at least eight nominees in all categories, and more than 10 in most. It’s hard to imagine any other New Jersey music scene even approaching those numbers.
The 22nd annual edition of this awards show takes place Dec. 18 at the Stone Pony. Comedian Taylor Allen will host, and performers will include Eastbourne, Hot Blood, Negative Sky, The Battery Electric, Lords of Mercy, Deal Casino, Matt Wade, Frank Lombardi, Bobby Mahoney and the Seventh Son, and Sofia Nicole.
The show is presented by The Saint, and the Asbury Music Company. The awards are voted on, but voters must be approved. To be considered, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Categories range from Top Rock Band and Top Local Record Release to Top Avant-Garde Act, Top Music Photographer and Top Live Sound Engineer. The Best Thing to Happen 2014/2015 category includes Brick + Mortar making the Billboard charts, Nicole Atkins launching her own record label, the Skate & Surf festival returning to Asbury Park, the Stone Pony celebrating its 40th anniversary and the Saint celebrating its 20th anniversary.
