Garry Tallent was joined by Bruce Springsteen at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park on July 6.
Bruce Springsteen joined Garry Tallent to play guitar and sing backing vocals on one song, “Dirty Rotten Shame,” at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, July 6. You can watch a video of it below (thanks to Stan Goldstein for posting it to YouTube!).
A fast garage-rock song, “Dirty Rotten Shame” appears on Tallent’s album More Like Me, which will be released on Aug. 2. It’s the E Street Band bassist’s second solo album, following 2017’s Break Time.
“I gotta teach him the song,” said Garry Tallent, after Springsteen took the stage, but before they performed the song. “We only sang it one time.”
It took them less than two minutes to perform the song. Before they started, Tallent predicted it would be “the shortest time that this man has ever spent on one stage.”
Tallent, backed by the band The Delevantes, opened the show for Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. As I am writing this, at 9 p.m., the Jukes are still playing, performing the Springsteen-written “All the Way Home” (I’m listening live on the E Street Radio station, i.e., channel 20, on SiriusXM satellite radio).
9:26 p.m. Update: Springsteen just joined the Jukes for “Sherry Darling”! Separate post on that to come.
9:30 p.m. Update: “The man just can’t stay away from me,” Southside said before they started performing their second song together, “The Fever.”
9:39 p.m. Update: Now “Talk to Me.”
9:45 p.m. Update: Oh my gosh. “Kitty’s Back,” now. This is turning into an epic guest appearance.
9:54 p.m. Update: “That’s hard, we almost got it,” said Springsteen after a truly great “Kitty’s Back.” Now they’re doing “I Don’t Want to Go Home.”
9:57 p.m. Update: In middle of song, Southside gives thanks to Springsteen, opening act Remember Jones, and “Mr. Garry W. Tallent, from Neptune, N.J.” Mentions that Springsteen and Tallent both have new albums, and sarcastically thanks Springsteen for making him look bad.
9:58 p.m. Update: Next song is Bo Diddley’s “Mona,” segueing into Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.” Springsteen sings lead on “Not Fade Away.”
10:05 p.m. Update: “Having a Party” (maybe the last song?)
10:13 p.m. Update: “Having a Party” ends. Southside says goodnight. “Good to see ya in Asbury Park,” Springsteen tells the audience.
10:14 p.m. Update: Southside and the Jukes continue without Springsteen, playing “Until the Good Is Gone.”
