Patti Scialfa and Bruce Springsteen take their bows after “Springsteen on Broadway,” March 15.

It was widely anticipated, and now it’s official: Bruce Springsteen will be given a Special Tony at this year’s awards show, for his hit “Springsteen on Broadway,” but will not compete in any of the other categories.

The nominees were announced today, and the list of nominees can be seen at tonyawards.com.

According to Tony rules, the Special Tony honors “a live theatrical event that … does not fit into any other category of Tony Award to be awarded for the current season.” This is the category where Lena Horne got a Tony for 1981/1982 “The Lady and Her Music”; where Judy Garland was honored for her enthusiastically received shows at the Palace Theatre in 1951; and where, more recently, non-traditional Broadway fare such as “Dame Edna: The Royal Tour,” Sarah Jones’ “Bridge and Tunnel” and “Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on Broadway” has been honored.

The Tony Awards will take place June 10 at 8 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and will be broadcast live on CBS television. Visit tonyawards.com.

“Springsteen on Broadway” will run through Dec. 15; visit brucespringsteen.net/shows.
