Former Deep Purple vocalist Glenn Hughes sang the band’s furious rock anthem “Highway Star” and two other songs with guitarists Joe Satriani, Phil Collen (of Def Leppard) and John Petrucci (of Dream Theater) at NJPAC in Newark, Feb. 18.

Satriani, Collen and Petrucci have been performing together as G3 since mid-January. Since 1996, Satriani has used that title, occasionally, for tours teaming him with two other high-profile guitarists.

You can watch a video of “Highway Star,” below.

The song is from Deep Purple’s 1972 Machine Head album, a heavy metal landark. Hughes was not on the original recording but joined the band in 1973, and stayed until 1976. Hughes also sang lead in Black Sabbath in 1985 and 1986.

Hughes posted a photo of himself with Satriani on his Facebook page, along with a message that read, in part, “always a joy and pleasure to play and hang with you Joe.”

According to setlist.fm., Hughes also sang on the show’s two other encores, Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and the blues standard “Going Down,” and guitarist Alex Skolnick of Testament also played on those two songs.
