Grip Weeds concert and wax cylinder recording part of Edison Day this Saturday

The Grip Weeds have several New Jersey shows coming up, including a record release show April 10 at the Record Collector in Bordentown.

The Grip Weeds will perform at West Orange’s Edison Day celebration on Saturday.

Free wax cylinder recording demonstrations and a free concert by the Grip Weeds — a veteran Jersey band rooted in ’60s classic-rock, garage-rock and psychedelic rock — will be part of Edison Day at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park Laboratory Complex in West Orange, this Saturday.

The Grip Weeds performance will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on an outdoor stage near Alden Street and there will be three demonstrations of wax cylinder recording, the method for reproducing sound that Edison pioneered in the late 19th century, in the complex’s building 11: Marcus Milius will make a blues recording at 11:30 a.m., followed by Dolunay, playing Balkan music at 1:30 p.m., and saxophonist Chad Smith and harpist Lynette Wardle, playing the music of Rudy Wiedoeft (an Edison recording artist from 1917 to 1924) at 3:30 p.m.

Edison Day, which also offers a variety of educational activities throughout the day, takes place in conjunction with the West Orange Street Fair and Classic Car Show in downtown West Orange. For a complete list of activities, visit westorange.org.
