Joe D’Urso will perform Steven Van Zandt songs in Asbury Park, Oct. 3.

At Darlene Love’s Saturday night concert at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, Steven Zan Zandt not only led the large backing band and played guitar throughout the evening, but sang three of his own songs. I remember thinking to myself how great it would be if he did an entire concert devoted to his own material — songs that he has recorded for his own projects, or given to Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, Love or others — with the same kind of big band behind him.

Well, that’s not going to happen anytime soon, as far as I know. But the Where Music Lives Exhibit & Performance Center in Asbury Park will present a Van Zandt tribute, as performed by singer-songwriter Joe D’Urso, on Oct. 3. The show takes place in conjunction with an exhibition of Van Zandt photos, videos and memorabilia that is on display at Where Music Lives through Nov. 1; half the songs will be written by Van Zandt and half will be D’Urso originals, D’Urso says.

Tickets are a $13 donation to the nonprofit Asbury Park Musical Heritage Foundation, or a $23 donation for VIP seating.

Here is a video of D’Urso performing an excellent cover of Van Zandt’s “All I Needed Was You.”
