Bruce Springsteen sang Lorde’s “Royals” when he performed in her hometown — Auckland, New Zealand — in March 2014, and she returned the favor at the Prudential Center in Newark, April 6, singing his “I’m on Fire.” You can watch videos of both performances, below.

Lorde, born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, sang “I’m on Fire” — a Top 10 hit for Springsteen, more than a decade before she was born, in 1996 — in a medley with her own “400 Lux.”

“I wanna play something by someone that I really love, for you,” she told the crowd, while sitting on the edge of the stage. “He’s from your part of town. And my first experience with this person, I was 11 years old, and I was in the school yearbook club … and it was our deadline. And the teacher who was in charge of it was really stressed out, and … at this point I had started singing, and she said, ‘Ella, I just need you to go and learn the words to a song and sing it to me, to just calm me down a little bit.’ And that song was ‘Born to Run.’ So that was my first kind of Bruce Springsteen experience, where I had my mind blown by ‘Born to Run.’ And then I went through Nebraska, Born in the USA, Darkness on the Edge of Town …

“This is a song I love of Bruce’s. It’s a song about desire.”
