Richard Barone and James Mastro — bandmates in the influential Hoboken-based alt-rock band The Bongos who also released an album together, Nuts and Bolts, in 1983 — will perform a rare set as a duo at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair, Oct. 6, in a benefit for NJArts.net.
They’ll perform both on their own and with backing by the band Elk City, who will also open the 8 p.m. show. Glenn Mercer of another legendary New Jersey band, The Feelies, will perform with his own Glenn Mercer Band at 9 p.m.

This is the fourth benefit for NJArts.net and, like it predecessors, it also serves as a showcase for some of the best music that New Jersey has to offer.
The first one, in March 2016, featured Barone along with the late Pat DiNizio, The Weeklings, The Grip Weeds, Speed the Plough and many others, and took place at Crossroads in Garwood. The second, whose participants included Tony Trischka, the Shockenaw Mountain Boys, Barry Mitterhoff, Kinderhook and Lisa Bouchelle, was also at Crossroads, in October 2017. The lineup of the third, at the Stanhope House in March of this year, included The Shockenaw Mountain Boys, John Ginty & Friends, The Porchistas and The Outcrops.
