With Whitney Houston’s long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame taking place on Nov. 7, many will undoubtedly remember the performance that could be seen as the pinnacle of her career: Her performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 1991 Super Bowl.
It’s a good time to remember, though, that Houston, who died in 2012, always seemed to rise to the occasion and come up big at big events. Below are 10 thrilling performances from 10 different events (including the Super Bowl), over the years.
Joining Houston in the Hall’s class of 2020 are Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G., The Doobie Brothers, Depeche Mode and T. Rex. Jon Landau and Irving Azoff — best known for managing Bruce Springsteen and The Eagles, respectively — will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which is reserved for non-performers.
Participants in the induction ceremony will include Springsteen, Luke Bryan, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Miley Cyrus, Billy Gibbons, Dave Grohl, Don Henley, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, Chris Martin, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Brad Paisley, St. Vincent, Ringo Starr, Gwen Stefani, Charlize Theron and Nancy Wilson.
The ceremony will be shown at 8 p.m. ET Nov. 7 on HBO, with a simulcast on SiriusXM satellite radio on the following channels: Classic Vinyl (channel 26), VOLUME (channel 106) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Radio (channel 310). It will also be available for streaming on HBO Max.
