Andrea McArdle, best known for playing the title role in “Annie” when the musical debuted on Broadway in 1977, will return to the play — in the role of the evil, hard-drinking orphanage owner, Miss Hannigan — at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal.

Shows are scheduled to take place Nov. 2-4, 8-11 and 16-18, and tickets are currently on sale; visit axelrodartscenter.com.

McArdle, 54, was nominated for a Lead Actress Tony for her work in “Annie,” becoming the youngest actress ever nominated for the award. She subsequently appeared on Broadway in “Starlight Express,” “Les Misérables,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “State Fair,” as well as becoming a cabaret singer and recording artist.  She has played Miss Hannigan before, in California and North Carolina, in 2010.

In the more immediate future, McArdle and Donna McKechnie will team up for a show paying tribute to the songs of Marvin Hamlisch and Stephen Sondheim at the Chase Room at NJPAC in Newark, March 10 at 6 and 8:30 p.m. For information about this show, visit njpac.org.
