‘Coriolanus,’ ‘Richard III’ to be among offerings in Shakespeare Theatre of NJ’s next season

by JAY LUSTIG

shakespeareOne of the few surviving copies of Shakespeare’s First Folio — the first publication of The Bard’s works, from 1623 — will be on tour this year, making stops in all 50 states. In New Jersey, the First Folio will be on display, in October, at Drew University in Madison, which also happens to be the home of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Appropriately enough, the theater will be presenting one of Shakespeare’s works, “Richard III,” that month.

Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” and the spirited spoof “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare(abridged)(revised)” will also be part of the season, along with works by Noël Coward, Eugene Ionesco, Dylan Thomas and others.

Here is the schedule. All plays will be at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Main Stage at Drew University in Madison, except for “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)(revised),” which will be at the outdoor stage at the College of St. Elizabeth in Morris Township.

May 11-29: “A Song at Twilight,” by Noël Coward, directed by Paul Mullins.
June 22-July 31: “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)(revised),” by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, directed by Jeffrey M. Bender.
July 6-24: “Coriolanus,” by William Shakespeare, directed by Brian B. Crowe.
Aug. 10-28: “Exit the King,” by Eugene Ionesco, directed by Bonnie J. Monte.
Sept. 7-25: “Red Velvet,” by Lolita Chakrabarti, directed by Bonnie J. Monte.
Oct. 5-Nov. 6: “Richard III,” by William Shakespeare, directed by Paul Mullins.
Oct. 24: “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” readings of macabre passages from Shakespeare and others.
Nov. 30-Jan. 1: “A Child’s Christmas in Wales,” by Dylan Thomas, directed by Joseph Discher.
Dec. 12: “Something Merry This Way Comes,” holiday tales, songs and poems.
