LYNN NOTTAGE
Staged readings of two plays by Lynn Nottage, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2009 for “Ruined,” will be part of the Genesis Festival at the Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, Oct. 2-4. Nottage’s “Fabulation, or the Re-Education of Undine,” and “Intimate Apparel,” both of which are about black female entrepreneurs, will be presented at 3 and 8 p.m., respectively — with the same cast — on Oct. 3. Both plays are scheduled to receive full productions at Crossroads in its 2016-17 season.
There will also be staged readings of Christine Anderson’s “How to Catch Creation,” at 8 p.m. Oct. 2, and Angelica Chéri’s “The Sting of White Roses,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 4. Both playwrights are protégés of Nottage
All readings will be followed by receptions and talkbacks with the artists.
The plays echo the theme of “everyday heroes” in Crossroads’ 2015-16 season, said producing artistic director Marshall Jones III in a press release: ”In all of this season’s plays, the lead characters are everyday people who either aspire to achieve great things or their circumstances force them to do great things. This is certainly true of the main characters in Ms. Nottage’s plays.”
