The McCarter Theatre Center’s 2018-19 season will include works by, from left, Douglas McGrath, Dominique Morisseau, Ken Ludwig, Eleanor Burgess and David Hare, as well as Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

The world premiere production of a new adaptation of Edith Wharton’s classic 1920 novel, “The Age of Innocence,” will be among the McCarter Theatre Center’s six offerings in its 2018-19 season.

The play was written by Douglas McGrath, who received a Tony nomination in the Best Book for a Musical category for “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” and whose other credits include the screenplays of “Emma” and “Nicholas Nickleby.” It is being produced in association with Hartford Stage, and will be seen there first, in April and May. It will then open the Princeton theater center’s season, Sept. 7-Oct. 7.

The other offerings will be:

• “Detroit ’67,” by Dominique Morisseau, Oct. 9-28.

Also presented in association with Hartford Stage, this play is about a brother and sister who operate an unlicensed after-hours juke joint in Detroit as the 1967 riots take place.

• “A Christmas Carol,” adapted by David Thompson from Charles Dickens’ novella, Dec. 4-29.

The McCarter’s traditional holiday season offering, in a well-received production that debuted in 2016.

• “The Niceties,” by Eleanor Burgess, Jan. 11-Feb. 10.

A world premiere production (in association with the Huntington Theatre Company) about a black student at an Ivy League university who writes a thesis about slavery’s effect on the American Revolution.

• “The Gods of Comedy,” by Ken Ludwig, March 12-31, 2019.

Another world premiere production (in association with the Old Globe Theatre) about a Princeton classics professor who interacts with the gods of comedy from Ancient Greece.

• “Skylight,” by David Hare, May 3-June 2, 2019.

This drama, about an encounter between a couple who broke up many years previously, debuted in England in 1995 but won the Best Revival of a Play Tony in 2015.
