Five musicals, including two world premieres and one East Coast premiere, will make up the 2018-19 season at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn.
As previously announced, the season will open with “Unmasked,” devoted to the songs and stories of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and including some of his famous work from musicals such as “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita,” “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera.” “Unmasked” will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 28.
Next up will be “Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn,” Nov. 21-Dec. 30, based on the classic 1942 movie and featuring songs such as “Easter Parade,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and “White Christmas.”
“My Very Own British Invasion” — loosely based on the experiences on Herman’s Hermits frontman Peter Noone, and featuring songs by Herman’s Hermits, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Petula Clark and others — will run from Jan. 31 to March 3. Rick Elice, who co-wrote the book for “Jersey Boys,” wrote the book for this world premiere.
“Benny & Joon,” a musical based on the 1993 film that co-starred Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson, will make its East Coast premiere from April 4 to May 5, 2019.
“Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” a stage version of the popular 1991 film that ran on Broadway from 1994 to 2007, closes the season from May 29 to June 30, 2019.
