CHRIS WALLACE

The South Orange Performing Arts Center’s virtual Independent Voices series will feature a conversation with broadcast journalist Chris Wallace — formerly of ABC and NBC and now with Fox, where he often has served as a contrarian to Trump Administration officials and others — May 4 at 7:30 p.m., with an audience Q&A session following.

Wallace will contribute his “unique insights on the critical and evolving role of the media” as well as an “insider look into the current political environment, the White House and the future of America,” according to a press release.

Given recent efforts of many conservatives to delegitimize the media, along with the collapse of local news, the Independent Voices series, which seeks to inspire civil discourse, is timely.

Budd Mishkin, a New Jersey resident and journalist for almost 40 years, will serve as moderator.

“I’m really looking forward to hosting the conversation with Chris Wallace, who has had an amazing broadcast journalism career,” said Mishkin. “I had the pleasure of interviewing his father, (longtime ’60 Minutes’ correspondent) Mike Wallace, for a profile on NY1 in 2003.”

Budd Mishkin, left, with Dan Rather.

Mishkin was one of the original journalists on NY1, New York City’s 24-hour television news channel, served as an anchor and correspondent for the CBS News Radio Network, and now works part-time for WINS (1010 am) radio.

In 2003, he created my favorite weekly television news series, NY1’s “One on 1 with Budd Mishkin,” where he showcased, with his trademark grace, intelligence and humor, the heart and soul of New York. From 2003 to 2017, he interviewed and profiled more than 400 prominent New Yorkers from many different fields, including Spike Lee, Ed Koch, Gloria Steinem, Yoko Ono and Jack Klugman.

He also served as host and reporter for “Sports on 1: The Last Word,” NY1’s nightly sports show, from 1992 to 2017.

He has hosted and created nights of conversations with luminaries for venues in New York, New Jersey and beyond, with people such as Judy Collins, Harry Belafonte, Wynton Marsalis, David Johansen and Ira Glass.

Mishkin’s podcast, “Stories From the First 60 Years with Budd Mishkin,” is a captivating series of personal and professional stories gathered from his entire life. He created this “personal narrative podcast” from pieces he started writing last year, he says.
