Outpost in the Burbs concerts offer performers and audience members the opportunity to connect with each other in an intimate musical setting. “We’re unlike any other venue,” said Gina Auriemma, president of the Outpost’s board of trustees. “The atmosphere is inviting and cozy. Artists feel like they’re members of a big family when they come to perform, and the audience feels the same way.

“Outpost is more than just a concert series — it’s a community.”

Operating from four different venues in Montclair, the non-profit outreach organization is dedicated to building community through music, community service and cultural programs. Run entirely by volunteers since its launch in 1987, the Outpost has produced more than 350 concerts by internationally known artists including Judy Collins, Roger McGuinn, Jorma Kaukonen, Richard Thompson, Alejandro Escovedo, Chris Hillman, Richie Havens, J.D. Souther, Dar Williams and Steve Forbert. The Outpost’s 2015 fall season opens on Sept. 13 with Jeffrey Gaines and Freedy Johnston and includes concerts by Amy Helm, Joseph Arthur, the James Maddock Trio, Paula Cole and The THE BAND Band (celebrating the 39th anniversary of The Last Waltz).

While the Outpost website, outpostintheburbs.org, details its concert schedule and activities calendar (a mix of volunteer opportunities and community-building activities such as hiking, touring and day trips), if you haven’t been to a performance, you can get a sense of it with our “A Seat in the House” video, a joint production with Montclair State University’s School of Communication and Media. The first in what may become a regular NJArts.net series about arts venues across the state, the video below was filmed before and during singer-songwriter Joan Osborne’s third Outpost concert, on Feb. 27.

The Outpost concerts at Van Vleck and Gardens in Montclair are also superb and highlight how special it is to combine great music with a beautiful setting.
