Beat will perform at NJPAC in Newark, Nov. 9.
Beat, co-founded by former King Crimson bandmates Adrian Belew and Tony Levin in 2024 to play a “creative reinterpretation” of music from the period when they were both members (1981-1984), will continue this year with a new tour and a new lineup.
Guitarist Steve Vai will continue in the group with singer-guitarist Belew and bassist Levin. But Terry Bozzio — who has previously played with Frank Zappa and the bands Missing Persons and U.K. — will replace Danny Carey of Tool, on drums.
Belew said in a press release that Carey’s “extraordinary musicianship, generosity, humor, and explosive creativity helped establish BEAT as something far beyond a tribute. He helped create its identity. While Tool commitments keep him from joining us this fall, he remains an essential part of our family.”
The tour is currently scheduled to last from Oct. 9 to Dec. 3, with one New Jersey show: Nov. 9 at Prudential Hall at NJPAC in Newark. Tickets will go on sale Aug. 7 at 10 a.m., with pre-sales beginning Aug. 4 at noon; visit ticketmaster.com.
Belew said in a press release when the 2024 tour was announced: “The 1981 through 1984 King Crimson created a music all its own. Timeless. Beautiful. Complex. Fierce. For the fans who lived through it then, and the ones who never got to witness it, our aim is to bring it to life again. A monumental task but we’re going for it! There are not enough exclamation points to express my excitement!”
The albums that King Crimson made from 1981 to 1984 were Discipline (1981), Beat (1982) and Three of a Perfect Pair (1984). Belew said in the press release that some ’90s King Crimson material will be added to the setlists this time around, too. (He and Levin also played in the band from 1994 to 1999.)
