Jersey City Theater Center will present “Juliet & Jul-Yingtai” at White Eagle Hall, Oct. 23-24.
The planned reopening of the Loew’s Jersey Theatre, in November, has resulted in major changes for another Jersey City venue, White Eagle Hall. Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which operates the Loew’s venue, is not renewing its lease for White Eagle Hall, which will now be booked by the Jersey City Theater Center.
This means, basically, the end of White Eagle Hall as a rock-concert venue, as JCTC will concentrate on theater and dance.
Here are the shows currently scheduled for White Eagle Hall:
Sept. 26: “Insun Park & Generals,” described on the White Eagle Hall website as “a groundbreaking fusion of rock, Korean traditional music, and mask dance rhythms.”
Oct. 3: “Miss Bellas,” described on the White Eagle Hall website as an “original music-theater work that explores fame, class division, cultural erasure, and moral responsibility.”
Oct. 23-24: “Juliet & Jul-Yingtai,” a play combining elements from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and the Chinese folk tale “Butterfly Lovers,” produced by Boston-based Vermilion Theater.
Nov. 20: “Try/Step/Trip,” which has been described as “a concept musical rooted in hip-hop and embodied through the choreographic language of step.”
According to NJBiz.com, the venue will also be “expanding private events such as weddings, corporate functions and community gatherings.”
The Loew’s Jersey Theatre can accommodate up to 4,000 people (though just 2,600-2,700 if seating is used on the orchestra floor). White Eagle Hall’s capacity is 800.
Loew’s Jersey Theatre’s grand reopening concerts will be by The Trey Anastasio Band, Nov. 13; and The War on Drugs, Nov. 14.
