NJPAC celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. with free ‘Embodying the Dream’ events

More than a dozen free classes and workshops will be offered as part of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s “Embodying the Dream Festival,” a celebration of the life and message of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 16 at NJPAC’s Center for Arts Education at 24 Rector St., Newark.

Offerings will include:

Dance Theatre of Harlem workshop.

Liturgical dance workshop.

“Celebrate the Dream through Dance,” with members of Carolyn Dorfman Dance.

History of stepping workshop.

Cabaret workshop: “Storytelling through Song.”

“A Love Supreme: Jazz Music of the 1960s,” focusing on the work of John Coltrane.

“DJ Workshop: Sampling from James Brown to Present.”

“MLK to this Day,” looking at civil rights history as reflected by swing, hip-hop and other forms of music.

 “Community Art Project: I Dream a World,” making King’s legacy concrete by crafting with recycled objects.

• Civil rights storytelling.

• “Poetry and the Black Arts Movement,” featuring works by writers such as Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou and Lorraine Hansberry.

• “Talking Drum: Poetry Jam,” using “Martin’s Dream” as the theme.
