BILLY JOEL

Billy Joel has announced that he is cancelling all his upcoming shows due to a recent diagnosis of a condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus.

He had been scheduled to perform with Stevie Nicks at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, Aug. 8, with other tour stops including Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York, with Rod Stewart, July 18; and Citi Field in Queens, New York, with Sting, Aug. 21.

A statement has been posted to Joel’s Facebook account saying “This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance. Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.

“He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”

The post also includes a message from Joel: “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”

According to the post, ticket purchases will be refunded automatically, so there is nothing that people need to do.

The Mayo Clinic defines normal pressure hydrocephalus as “the buildup of fluid in cavities called ventricles deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain.

“Cerebrospinal fluid usually flows through the ventricles and bathes the brain and spinal column. But the pressure of too much cerebrospinal fluid can damage brain tissues and cause a range of symptoms related to brain function.”
