Bruce Springsteen sang Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom” with Joan Baez and performed other songs such as Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” with others at the Tom Morello-organized Power to the People Festival at The Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland (about 40 miles from Washington, D.C.), Oct. 3. The show ended with dozens of performers singing John Lennon’s “Power to the People.”

You can watch the video below.

Before singing with Baez, Springsteen called her “one of my great inspirations” and “a woman who has been a fighting and positive voice for social change, for justice and equality, in every decade since the 1960s.”

It was an amazing day, overall, with other highlights including sets by Morello, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Dropkick Murphys and Jack Black (doing Black Sabbath songs with a band including Morello’s son Roman and, on one song, Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler). Stephen Stills was a surprise guest, joining Morello and Nathaniel Rateliff for his classic protest song, “For What It’s Worth.”

During “Rockin’ in the Free World,” Matthews diverged from the original lyrics, singing lines like “Got another school shooting, we could pray again” and “Turn a million trees into toilet paper/Greenhouse gas for the ozone layer,” and referring to President Trump as “a liar and a thief” who “says he’s God’s right hand.”

According to the festival’s website, “A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales plus 100% of the net proceeds from VIP tickets will be donated to VoteRiders — a pro-democracy, pro-voter organization working to restore and strengthen democracy by eliminating confusing and restrictive ID-related barriers to the ballot box — and HeadCount who will also be on site to help fans register to vote and learn more about how to participate in upcoming elections.”

These are the songs that Springsteen performed:

“Streets of Minneapolis” (solo)
“Chimes of Freedom” (with Joan Baez)
“Clampdown” (with Tom Morello and Morello’s band)
“The Ghost of Tom Joad” (with Tom Morello and Morello’s band)
“Fortunate Son” (with Tom Morello, Nathaniel Rateliff, Dave Matthews and Morello’s band)
“Rockin’ in the Free World” (with Tom Morello, Dave Grohl, Dave Matthews and Morello’s band)
“This Land Is Your Land” (with Tom Morello, Joan Baez, Dave Matthews, Grandson, DMC, Morello’s band and many of the other show participants)
“Power to the People” (with everyone)

Here is the video. The final eight-song sequence with Springsteen begins about eight hours and 30 minutes in.

Stephen Stills wrote ‘the classic protest song’ “For What it’s Worth.”

I didn’t mean to imply that he didn’t. But yes, it would make that clearer to change “the” to “his,” so I have done that. Thanks.
