Light of Day fest adds Remember Jones show at Paramount Theatre

by JAY LUSTIG

Remember Jones will perform “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” in its entirety at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, Jan. 13.

The Light of Day Festival traditionally includes one show at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. But next’s month’s fest, taking place Jan. 6-16, will have a second one, as well. In addition to the Jan. 14 show (whose lineup has not yet been announced), there will be one on Jan. 13 featuring singer Remember Jones and a 20-piece band performing Joe Cocker’s 1970 Mad Dogs and Englishmen double live album in its entirety.

Since the album heavily features Leon Russell, the show will also serve as a tribute to Russell, who died in November.

Remember Jones has performed “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” in New Jersey before. A show in August 2015 at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal featured not only songs from the double album, but material from the tour that showed up later on a deluxe CD reissue. So you got not just “The Letter,” “Feelin’ Alright,” “Superstar” and “Delta Lady,” but also “Let It Be,” “The Weight,” “Something” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.”

(1/5/17 Update: Guest performers will include pianists Jeff Kazee, Bobby Lynch, Arlan Feiles, Karlee Bloom, Sam Sherman, Brett Mayer, Ryan Gregg, Eric Safka, Mark Masefield; drummers Kevin Grossman and Francis Valentino; and singers Constantine Maroulis, Brielle Von Hugel, Virginia Cavaliere, Sean Matthew Whiteford, Michael Siktberg, Bre Cade, JaQuita, Allison McKenzie, Emily Grove and Anthony Walker.)

I am told that yes, they do include admission to this event. I would recommend getting there pretty early, though, (1) to make sure you get a good seat and (2) because if the theater is totally full, they might not let any more people in even if you have an all-access ticket. (That happened to me once, though at a much smaller Light of Day venue. I wouldn’t think you would have that problem at the Paramount, but you never know).
