BERNIE WORRELL

Fans can support keyboardist Bernie Worrell, who is fighting lung cancer that has metastasized to his liver and pleural cavities, via a just-launched fundraising campaign designed to help him with medical bills and other expenses.

Visit youcaring.com/supportbernieworrell for information. The goal is $75,000.

Worrell, who grew in Plainfield and has lived in New Jersey for most of his life, is one of the leading synthesizer players in the history of funk, rock, R&B and hip-hop, best known for his wildly inventive (and heavily sampled) work with George Clinton’s Parliament and Funkadelic ensembles. He also also worked with Talking Heads and countless other groups, including his own Bernie Worrell Orchestra.

Last year, he appeared as a keyboard player in the Meryl Streep movie, “Ricki and the Flash.”

Worrell, 71, is still recording, and recently completed Retrospectives, an all-instrumental collection of P-Funk music. For information, visit BernieWorrell.com.

“After years of fans asking — ‘is there an instrumental version — just the music,’ Bernie finally decided to ‘give the people what they want and THIS is the result!!” reads a message at bernieworrell.bandcamp.com, where the album can be bought.
