Springsteen ‘sends a letter back home’ from Australia

by JAY LUSTIG

Bruce Springsteen is keeping an eye on what’s happening back home during his current tour of Australia and New Zealand.

“We stand before you, embarrassed Americans, tonight,” said Bruce Springsteen at the start of his concert today at AAMI Park in Melbourne, Australia.

He was referring, apparently, to news reports that President Trump had, in a phone call with Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, abruptly ended it early after getting into an argument over an agreement President Obama made to let immigrants into our country.

He then performed a solo acoustic version of a song he has never sung before, The Orlons’ 1962 hit “Don’t Hang Up,” saying he wanted to use it to “send a letter back home.” This was pointedly followed by his own immigrants’ anthem, “American Land.” You can watch this segment at the 1:40 mark of the video below.

At the start if his current tour, with the E Street Band, of Australia and New Zealand, he declared himself and the group part of the “new American resistance.”
