Barry Manilow’s tour stopped at the Prudential Center in Newark Sunday night, and left something behind: A Yamaha keyboard, donated to the Newark’s public schools. Manilow explained from the stage that night that studying music in high school had changed his life, and so he launched his Manilow Music Project to help support music education.
The Prudential Center itself, through its charitable foundation Devils Care, also contributed to the project by donating a set of instruments — including a trumpet, a saxophone, a clarinet and a flute — to Newark public schools.
“I know firsthand how invaluable music education is,” said Manilow, in a statement. “It is a privilege for me to help bring the gift of music to these kids.”
Manilow also performs Wednesday night at the Barclays Center in his original hometown of Brooklyn, on his 72nd birthday.
