Lisa Fischer, a Brooklyn native who has lived in Hoboken since 1989, has been a backing vocalist for most of her career. But she had a starring role in the 2013 documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” which took a close look at the careers and lives of singers like her who have, for various reasons, toiled away in relative anonymity even though their work has been heard by millions.
And now she has a Grammy to show for it.
“20 Feet From Stardom” won a Grammy today in the Music Film category, beating out Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories,” “Metallica Through the Never,” Pink’s “The Truth About Love Tour: Live From Melbourne” and “Beyoncé & Jay Z: On the Run Tour.”
Four “20 Feet From Stardom” vocalists — Fischer, Darlene Love, Merry Clayton and Judith Hill — were designated as honorees, since they are the main singers in the movie (others are in it as well, though).
Fischer has spent most of her career working with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross, Tina Turner and Sting, though she has recorded on her own as well, and even won a Female R&B Vocal Grammy in 1992 for her “How Can I Ease the Pain” (the only Top 40 hit of her solo career).
Best Music Film was one of the awards given out in the pre-broadcast section of the Grammys. The broadcast begins at 8 p.m. tonight on CBS television. For a current list of winners, click here.
