Southside Johnny and Steven Van Zandt reunite, in Amsterdam (WITH VIDEO)

Southside Johnny and Steven Van Zandt perform together in Amsterdam.

They had to travel more than 3,500 miles to do it, but Jersey rock legends Steven Van Zandt and Southside Johnny performed together tonight in Amsterdam, singing “I Don’t Want to Go Home” and “It’s Been a Long Time” as the encores of a show by Van Zandt and his Disciples of Soul. Asbury Jukes keyboardist Jeff Kazee also performed on the songs. (see video below).

The show was at the Koninklijk Theater Carré, June 25. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were at another Amsterdam venue, The Paradiso, June 24.

Van Zandt wrote both songs. “I Don’t Want to Go Home” was the title track of the Jukes’ 1976 debut album, which Van Zandt produced, and has subsequently become one of their signature songs. “It’s Been a Long Time” was sung by Van Zandt, Southside and Bruce Springsteen on the 1991 Jukes album, Better Days, which Van Zandt also produced.

Van Zandt recorded his own version of “I Don’t Want to Go Home” on his recent album, Soulfire, and has been performing it regularly at shows with his Disciples of Soul.

The Asbury Jukes’ next Jersey show is July 1 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park. Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul will perform with Jackson Browne and others at the Laid Back Festival at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, Sept. 21.

I had a great evening in Carré. But the night before in Paradiso Amsterdam was even better. Real magic. SouthSide and the Jukes went through the roof.
