10 reasons why you should support WFDU

WFDU\’s annual fundraising drive is taking place right now.

Here are 10 reasons why you should consider contributing to radio station WFDU (89.1 FM, wfdu.fm) during its annual fundraising drive. Ten reasons, that is, beyond the obvious one, which is that the non-commercial college radio station, at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, plays great music virtually all of the time.

(To donate, click here or call 201-692-2012.)

Here are the reasons:

1. I am listening to Jerry Treacy’s show, “Crash on the Levee,” right now, and he’s previewing “Let’s All Come Together,” a track from Willie Nile’s upcoming album, World War Willie. Where else on the airwaves are you going to hear that?

2. One of WFDU’s internet channels, at wfdu.fm, is devoted to jazz, and another one is devoted to classical music.

3. Different shows offer different premium packages. “Crash on the Levee” donation rewards, for instance, includes tickets for a variety of shows at the Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, Sanctuary Concerts in Chatham, the Ringwood Public Library, the City Winery in New York and other venues.

4. Evan Toth plays New Jersey music exclusively on his Friday afternoon show, “Garden State Sound.” And he had me on as a guest twice last year.

5. The one and only Uncle Floyd has his own show, Mondays from 6 to 9 a.m.

6. Musicians love WFDU. In fact, a slew of them, including Pete Levin, Rob Paparozzi, Arno Hecht and Nikki Armstrong, will perform at a fundraising party at Ranchero Cantino in Emerson, March 2 at 7 p.m.

7. More than 2.5 people listen to WFDU, either on the air or online, annually.

8. WFDU gets really cool guests. (Listen to a 2013 interview with Ronnie Spector, below).

9. WFDU has been honored by the national Blues Foundation with its Keeping the Blues Alive award.

10. Treacy is now playing the Rev. Gary Davis’ “Let Us Get Together Right Down Here.” Money donated to WFDU means songs like that will continue to have a radio home in New Jersey.

Wow Jay, much appreciated, thanks! Especially from someone who has always been so respected and incredibly supportive of the arts in NJ. Seems to me you were tuned in today?! Again, many thanks…
