
The Stone Pony in Asbury Park will present a Hungerthon event, Dec. 14.
WhyHunger — co-founded by the late Harry Chapin and radio talk-show host Bill Ayres — will present an all-star 50th anniversary Hungerthon Benefit Concert at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m.
Marc Ribler’s of Stevie Van Zandt’s Disciples of Soul band will serve as music director and perform with Disciples of Soul and E Street Band members. (DEC. 4 UPDATE: Van Zandt is now confirmed to be a participant). Other performers will include Steve Chapin & the Original Harry Chapin Band (featuring Tom Chapin and Jen Chapin), Jim Babjak and Dennis Diken of The Smithereens, Garry Tallent, Sameer Gadhia and Eric Cannata of Young the Giant, Yola, Amy Helm, The Dixie Dregs, Jimmy Vivino with Mark Barden, Randy C. Moore and Danny Clinch.
Between sets, footage from the films “Harry Chapin: When in Doubt, Do Something” and “Harry Chapin — Cat’s In the Cradle: The Song that Changed Our Lives” will be shown.
Tickets went on sale today via ticketmaster.com. Ticket proceeds will benefit WhyHunger (formerly known as World Hunger Year), and food collected on-site will be donated to the Shore-based Fulfill food bank (formerly The FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties).
Also, that afternoon, The Transparent Clinch Gallery in Asbury Park will host an “Artist Summit” on hunger and poverty, with many of the show’s participants and WhyHunger executive director Jenique Jones participating.
According to a press release, both the concert and the summit will be filmed for future streaming and media distribution.
