A March 12 concert at Carnegie Hall will pay tribute to Billy Joel.
Promoter Michael Dorf’s “Music Of” benefit series — which has, over the last two decades, raised more than $2 million for music education programs — will break from tradition with a Billy Joel tribute, March 12 at Carnegie Hall, at which the singers will be backed by Joel’s own touring band: keyboardist and bandleader David Rosenthal, saxophonist Mark Rivera, percussionist/vocalist Crystal Taliefero, guitarist Tommy Byrnes, bassist Andy Cichon, drummer Chuck Burgi, horn player Carl Fischer, and guitarist/vocalist Mike DelGuidice.
Performers will include Tanya Tucker, Bettye LaVette, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rob Thomas, Joel’s daughter Alexa Ray Joel, Pat Monahan of Train, Rufus Wainwright, Gavin DeGraw, Matt Nathanson, The War and Treaty, Joy Oladokun and Marc Roberge, with more to be announced later.
It is not known if Joel will attend, or perform.
The other artists whose songs have been honored at these shows, over the years, are Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Prince, Neil Young, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, David Byrne/Talking Heads, Patti Smith, The Who, Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, R.E.M., Jimmy Webb, Robert Johnson, Neil Sedaka, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Those who have shown up to perform include Springsteen, Smith, Byrne, Graham Nash and R.E.M.
