The cover of “JEM Records Celebrates Bob Dylan.”
The Jersey-based JEM Records label — which previously has released tribute albums celebrating the songwriting of John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Pete Townshend, Ray Davies, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, and David Bowie — has announced the seventh installment in the series. JEM Records Celebrates Bob Dylan will be released on Aug. 21.
“Does the world really need another Bob Dylan tribute album?” writes Richard Barone in the album’s liner notes. “The answer, at least for the foreseeable future, will always be ‘Yes.’ … Bob Dylan’s words continue to inspire in musicians. It’s uncanny that, when covered, his songs seem to embody, reveal, and communicate the innermost thoughts and even musical tendencies of the performer.”
Some of the songs on the album, such as “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” are well known, but others are more obscure. The song on it that surely the fewest Dylan fans are familiar with is “I Ain’t Gonna Go to Hell for Anybody,” which is not on any of Dylan’s studio albums, but was performed by him at many of his 1980 concerts (live recordings of it appear on his 2017 boxed set, The Bootleg Series Vol. 13: Trouble No More 1979–1981).
The first single, Paul Collins’ “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” will be released on June 19.
