The cover of “JEM Records Celebrates Bob Dylan.”
The Weeklings thoroughly reinvent Bob Dylan’s 1966 hit “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” on the upcoming album JEM Records Celebrates Bob Dylan, adding a new intro; a new, propulsive beat; biting new guitar riffs; and even a bit of another Dylan song, “Highway 61 Revisited.” The track has a crunchy power-pop feel, which feels both very un-Dylan-like and perfectly suited to the lyrics.
The album won’t be out until Aug. 21, but this song has been released today, as a single. You can listen to it below.
This is the latest in a series of JEM albums; previous editions have celebrated the songwriting of John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Pete Townshend, Ray Davies, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, and David Bowie.
Other songs on the album include:
“It Ain’t Me Babe,” The Airport 77s
“Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn),” The Half/Cubes
“Queen Jane Approximately,” The Anderson Council
“This Wheel’s on Fire,” The Grip Weeds
“Ain’t Gonna Go to Hell for Anybody,” The Jive
“Neighborhood Bully,” The Cynz
“Subterranean Homesick Blues,” The High Frequencies (previously released as a single)
“Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again,” Paul Collins (previously released as a single)
“It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” The Midnight Callers
“Meet Me in the Morning,” The On and Ons
“Mr. Tambourine Man,” Nick Piunti
