350 Jersey Songs (Father’s Day Weekend edition): ‘Sing, Sing, Sing,’ Max and Jay Weinberg

In 2009, Bruce Springsteen’s drummer Max Weinberg had to miss a number of E Street Band shows due to his commitments as the leader of the house band for Conan O’Brien, who was launching “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien.” His son Jay, then an 18-year-old freshman at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, filled in, and did a great job.

Jay, who grew up in Middletown Township, has gone on to play with other bands as well, including Madball and Against Me! He is now with Slipknot.

And so, in honor of Father’s Day Weekend, here is a video of the Weinbergs playing together in 2009 (the same year that Jay subbed with the E Street Band). The song is the Swing Era classic “Sing, Sing, Sing,” written by Louis Prima and popularized by Benny Goodman, and each Weinberg plays in his own style — Max generally more restrained and Jay wilder and looser.

The Weinbergs were performing as guest stars at the Drum Off competition at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, sponsored by the Guitar Center chain of musical instrument stores.

New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, for almost a year — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. We started in September 2014 and kept going through Sept. 2015. The complete list is here.
