NILS LOFGREN

On a cold winter’s day such as this one, there’s no better song than the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” Can we find a Jersey angle for it? Sure, no problem.

On Dec. 8, 2001, Nils Lofgren — an honorary New Jerseyan due to his longtime membership in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band — sang the song in tribute to George Harrison at the last of the five holiday charity concerts Springsteen organized that year at Convention Hall in Asbury Park. Harrison had died just nine days before.

At the first of the shows, Dec. 3, Springsteen opened with “Something” and “My Sweet Lord.” Bobby Bandiera had performed “Here Comes the Sun” at the first four shows, but was unable to attend the final one.

Listen to Lofgren singing “Here Comes the Sun,” below, and reproducing Harrison’s guitar riffs perfectly, and you’ll feel warmer in seconds.

New Jersey celebratedits 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we markedthe occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, clickhere.
