Stephen Colbert served as the one-night-only guest host of “Only in Monroe,” May 22.
On May 22, a day after his “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” ended its 11-year run on CBS television, Colbert quietly resurfaced — guest-hosting the “Only in Monroe” show on public access television in Monroe, Michigan.
“It’s been an excruciating 23 hours without being on TV,” said Colbert, in a show that was probably taped in advance. “So I am grateful to be able to be here on Monroe Community Media before they also get acquired by Paramount.”
You can watch the hour-long talk show below.
The show followed more or less the same format as “Late Show,” without the production values, live audience, or band. Colbert made jokes about local Monroe news, sampled chili dogs from local restaurants, and plugged upcoming Monroe events. He also interviewed actor Jeff Daniels and the regular co-hosts of “Only in Monroe,” and made a friendly live phone call to Byron Allen, whose “Comics Unleashed” is replacing “Late Show.”
“I”m coming for you, brother,” Colbert joked to Allen, since “Only in Monroe” and “Comics Unleashed” are now in the same time slot.
Jack White served as the show’s deadpan host and musical director (armed only with a boombox and a reel-to-reel tape machine), and Steve Buscemi appeared in a taped bit inspired by the presence of the Buscemi’s Pizza restaurant in Monroe.
Colbert ended the broadcast by announcing that since he was using a one-time only set, he was told that “it would actually be helpful for me to destroy it, which is pretty great news because right now, for no particular reason, I would very much like to break something.”
He, Daniels and White then broke down the set, took the pieces outside, and set them on fire.
