In one of those miracles of YouTube, a video was posted, in May, of Bruce Springsteen playing a surprise set with Clarence Clemons and Clemons’ Red Bank Rockers at the now defunct Tradewinds in Sea Bright, on June 28, 1993. You can watch it below.
They do five songs in the 34-minute fan-made video: “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” “From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come),” “Jersey Girl,” “Glory Days” and “Twist and Shout.”
At the time, Springsteen had recently wrapped up his 1992-93 world tour with his Other Band, which did not include Clemons, though Clemons and other E Streeters had guested at a concert that had taken place at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, June 24.
Springsteen was obviously thrilled to be playing with Clemons again. Go directly to 14:45 of the clip below if you want to see The Boss at his happiest, beaming as Clemons solos during “Jersey Girl.”
According to brucebase.wikidot.com, Springsteen performed at the beach-side Tradewinds eight times. The seven other times were with Cats on a Smooth Surface (1987), Tim McLoone’s Holiday Express (1994), Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers plus Steven Van Zandt and Max Weinberg (1995), The Wallflowers plus Jon Bon Jovi (1997) and Steve Earle & the Dukes (1998), as well as at Light of Day shows with Grushecky and others in 2001 and 2002.
