Carolyn Dorfman Dance will present a new work, “Traces,” and two older ones, “Echad” and “Keystone,” April 8 at 8 p.m. at the Victoria Theater at NJPAC in Newark, as part of the Union-based company’s annual gala benefit.
According to a press release, “Traces” explores “the forces that create and change us, divide and connect us. At its core, it is a work about memory, history, and now.”
Or, as Dorfman explained in her interview with This Is Jersey (see below), “For me, this is so significant in the times that we are in, that we do not recognize the impact that each of us has on one another — whether we personally interact, our words, our actions across the globe. It’s about how we become who we are, vertically through time and history, and how we connect to one another across the same time period.
“I sum it up best with a quote that I love by Wallace Stegner that says, ‘There is a sense in which we are all each other’s consequences.’ And ‘Traces’ really celebrates our common connections: That we are completely and inextricably linked.”

The show is part of the Jersey Moves! Festival of Dance, whose upcoming presentations at the Victoria Theater will include the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, June 3; and, on June 17, a show titled “Jersey (New) Moves! Emerging Choreographers” that will featured works by up-and-coming artists, partnered with mentors: ​Mario Gonzalez of Kendall Park (mentored by Karen Love of Umoja Dance Company); Ariel Grossman of Jersey City (mentored by Douglas Martin of American Repertory Ballet); Kyle Marshall of Jersey City (mentored by Sylvia Waters of Ailey II) and Scott Willits of Jersey City (mentored by Maurice Chestnut).
