Actor and filmmaker Danny DeVito paid tribute to the doo-wop of his Jersey Shore youth by singing “Over a Cup of Coffee,” a 1954 single by the Philadelphia-based group The Castelles, at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, Saturday night.

You can watch a clip of the sweet and sincere (albeit musically shaky) performance, below.

DeVito — who was born in Neptune Township and raised in Asbury Park, and is a member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame — sang it during an appearance he was making at the Asbury Park Music and Film Festival. The event was billed as “An Evening With Danny DeVito.”

DeVito introduced “Over a Cup of Coffee” as a song that he loved, and that he got “stuck on” when his heart was broken, when he was young.

He invited Jersey Shore doo-wop scene star Nicky Addeo to sing it, and Addeo asked DeVito to sing it with him. DeVito, however, ended up singing lead, with Addeo backing him.

It was all unrehearsed, Addeo said from the stage.

The festival ends today; for information, visit apmff.org.
