Deluxe reissue of The Replacements’ ‘Let It Be’ will include songs recorded live at City Gardens

Six songs recorded live at the City Gardens nightclub in Trenton on Feb. 11, 1984, and previously unreleased, will be part of a deluxe reissue of The Replacements’ 1984 album Let It Be.

The City Gardens songs will be included on a bonus 10-inch vinyl record. According to a press release, it is a soundboard recording and will include “a rare performance of the ballad ‘You’re Getting Married,’ a birthday request from the band’s original manager and Twin/Tone co-founder Peter Jesperson, who co-produced the 1984 album, as well as this Deluxe Edition. Westerberg altered the lyrics mid-song, delivering them to a punk crowd Jesperson feared ‘might eat him alive’ — but didn’t. ‘In all of The Replacements’ lore,’ he says, ‘I think this is one of the greatest moments ever.’ ”

In addition to “You’re Getting Married,” the other songs on the 10-inch are “I Will Dare,” “Hayday,” “20th Century Boy,” “God Damn Job” and “Color Me Impressed.”

The entire package will include a remastered version of the original album, plus alternate versions, demos and outtakes, plus live tracks recorded at Cubby Bear in Chicago in March 1984. All of the Chicago tracks and some of the alternate versions, demos and outtakes are previously unreleased.

City Gardens opened in the late ’70s and was most active in the mid- to late-’80s. Shows became more infrequent there during the ’90s, and by the end of that decade, the club had closed.
