“Say Something” faced stiff competition in the Pop Duo or Group category of today’s Grammy Awards. The collaboration between the duo A Great Big World (featuring Fair Lawn’s Ian Axel) and Christina Aguilera was up against “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX, “A Sky Full of Stars” by Coldplay, “Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, and “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry and Juicy J. But “Say Something” won, giving Axel and his A Great Big World partner Chad Vaccarino their first Grammys. (Aguilera had won four previously).

A Great Big World released “Say Something” — a heartbreaking ballad about making one last attempt to save a relationship that’s probably doomed to end — on its own, in September 2013. But the reworked version, featuring Aguilera and released in November of that year, had a much bigger impact, helped along by the exposure Aguilera was able to give it as one of the judges on television’s “The Voice.”
